Alphonso Davies has been appointed as the UN Refugee Agency’s Global Goodwill Ambassador – Davies, a Canadian-Liberian, joined the campaign because he came from a similar background – he was part of the Bayern team that won six trophies last season.

Bayern Munich midfielder Alphonso Davies has been named the UN Refugee Agency’s Global Goodwill Ambassador for the first time. The 20-year-old, who can also play defense, was born in a Ghanaian refugee camp and moved to Canada when he was five years old after his parents fled Liberia’s civil war.

Having overcome adversity to become a professional player, the Canadian-Liberian is now able to share his experiences with people who are in similar situations.

The Champions League winner hopes that telling his story will give people in refugee camps around the world fresh hope. ESPNFC quoted he as saying

“My personal story, I think, has the power to make a difference in people’s lives. It motivates me to work harder, because it reminds me of my origins.” Being a refugee is a part of my history, and I am glad to talk about it. It inspires me to be who I am every day, to reach out to others, to convince them there is hope, and to educate others about the situation.”

I just want to be a role model for other immigrants, so that they can look at me and see that there is hope, and that they will see that if we believe in ourselves, we can succeed.”

I am very passionate about raising consciousness and opening people’s eyes to the global situation.

In 27 appearances for the Bavarians in all competitions so far this season, Davies has scored once and helped on two other goals.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic of AC Milan was overcome with tears on Monday, March 22, as he returned to the Sweden national football team for the first time in five years, according to Legit.ng.

After Euro 2016, Ibrahimovic declared his retirement from international football and appeared to have played his last match for Sweden. However, his excellent form with Milan earned him a recall to the squad for the World Cup qualifiers this week.
