In October 2017, Yinka Lawanson (better known by his stage name “Lamboginny”) released his debut album at Nigeria’s Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison.
In 2009, Lamboginny gave his first concert at Kirikiri Prison in Lagos, in front of a large crowd of inmates.
He now performs three or four concerts a year in various prisons.
The goal is simple: to bring back the smiles of those who have been imprisoned.
“What makes me happy is when I see their faces lit up with hope,” he says. “This is to let them know that life hasn’t abandoned them.”
According to the US State Department’s Country Reports on Human Rights Practices, prison conditions in Nigeria are “harsh and life threatening.”
“Prisoners and detainees were allegedly subjected to extrajudicial executions, torture, gross overcrowding, food and water shortages, and other abuses,” according to the report.
According to the World Prison Brief, more than two-thirds of Nigeria’s inmates (67.9%) are pre-trial detainees or remanded.
This is the world’s 17th highest rate, compared to 20.3 percent in the United States and 27.9 percent in South Africa. Check out Lamboginny’s Songs, Videos and Albums below!
