Don Jazzy, the owner of the Mavin Record Label, has explained why he did not sign artists of Davido and Wizkid’s caliber while he was at the height of his career.
During the most recent interview that he gave, he discussed how much of a regret it was for him not to sign Simi when he had the chance to do so, and he went on to tell what happened to Falz, another artist who he almost signed.
When asked about the reasons why he did not sign artists such as Wizkid and Davido, he said that it was just a “coincidence.”
In reference to Wizkid, he explained that he had the chance to sign the Afrobeat Giant, but he lost out to the EME Boss, Banky W, who saw his brilliance and signed him instead.
He continued by saying that he had the option to sign Davido as well, but he decided against it because he believed the singer would be successful enough on his own without a record label agreement.
“I like Simi, I didn’t sign her. I wish I did. I like Teni, but I didn’t sign her. I wish I did. I had the opportunity of signing Davido but I didn’t because I kind of figured that he would be fine.”
“Wizkid, obviously, I couldn’t because Banky W got to him first. That would have been amazing. Falz, I love his work. We almost had a deal.”
