Samantha Power, the head of the US Agency for International Development, announced this in a statement on Wednesday that sparked outrage among Nigerians.

She stated, in her own words:

“Nigeria has roughly 40 million Twitter users, and it is home to Africa’s largest IT hub.”

“This suspension is a state-sanctioned suppression of free expression, and it should be lifted immediately.”

“The constitution of Nigeria guarantees freedom of expression. Nigerians’ capacity to exercise this basic right has been harmed by the government’s recent Twitter ban, which sends a negative message to the country’s residents, investors, and businesses.”

“Banning social media and restricting citizens’ capacity to seek, receive, and transmit information jeopardizes fundamental liberties. Our need for individual speech, free public debate, and accountability, as President Biden noted, has never been higher. More communication, not less, is the key to a more secure Nigeria, as are concerted efforts toward unity, peace, and prosperity.”
