Sindisiwe Chikunga Biography

South African politician Sindisiwe Chikunga was a member of the African National Congress. Chikunga served in public office (ANC). She was born in Umlazi, a township in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, on August 23, 1975. Umlazi is located in South Africa. She spent her childhood in the slum of KwaMashu and went to the renowned all-female boarding school Inanda Seminary School in Durban after moving there.

Chikunga got a bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and a post-graduate certificate in Business Administration from the University of Cape Town. Both institutions are located in South Africa.

Chikunga became a member of the ANC Women’s League in 2004 and was subsequently elected to the National Executive Committee of the organization. In addition to that, she held the position of Secretary-General of the ANC Youth League in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.

Chikunga won a seat in the South African Parliament as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the African National Congress in the 2009 election. After that, in 2010, she was appointed Deputy Minister of Transport, remaining in until 2018, when she finally stepped down. During her tenure as Deputy Minister of Transport in South Africa, she supervised the construction of several significant infrastructure projects, including the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project.

Chikunga was well-known for her dedication to the promotion of women’s rights and the progress of women’s empowerment. She participated in the ANC Parliamentary Women’s Caucus and the ANC Women’s League National Executive Committee throughout her time with the ANC. In addition, she presided over the parliamentary portfolio committee on transportation as its chairperson.

Chikunga was also engaged in several community development initiatives, including the formation of a not-for-profit organization that offered educational and training opportunities to young people living in rural regions of KwaZulu-Natal.

Sindisiwe Chikunga, who was 45 years old when she died on March 12, 2021, was unluckily taken from this world. Her loss was lamented by many individuals, including President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, who referred to her as “a committed servant of the people of South Africa” in a statement after her death.
