South African Maskandi artist MGQEBHULI delivers the title track from his own studio project, “Sengisele Ngedwa,” a song built around loss and the quiet weight of being left alone.

The phrase translates to something close to “I’m left by myself.” That’s about as direct as it gets. So the whole record leans into overcoming grief, coping with isolation and finding the inner strength to keep going when there’s no one left to lean on. It’s heavy subject matter, but MGQEBHULI doesn’t dress it up or rush past the pain.

Fingerpicked acoustic guitar carries most of the arrangement, layered with concertina lines and crisp shaker percussion that give it that mid-tempo, organic Maskandi feel. His vocal delivery is what really sells it, though. There’s a chant-like gravity to his phrasing, and you can hear the experience behind it. He controls the pace easily, letting a melancholy mood settle in from the very first line.

“MGQEBHULI Sengisele Ngedwa” ends up working as more than just a personal confession. Through familiar Zulu proverbs and grounded storytelling, it becomes something closer to a consoling hymn for anyone who’s felt genuinely alone.
