Maropene Ramokgopa Biography

Dr. Maropene Ramokgopa is a South African physician and public health expert who has been recognized for the significant contributions she has made to the area of medicine. She was born on May 6th, 1970, in the little town of Ga-Mphahlele, Limpopo, South Africa.

1995 was the year that Ramokgopa graduated with a doctor of medicine degree from the University of Natal Medical School. In subsequent years, she returned to the University of Pretoria to get a Master of Science in Public Health. In 2005, she completed the requirements necessary to become a College of Public Health Medicine of South Africa Fellow.

Since Ramokgopa is so dedicated to bettering the general population’s Health, she has worked at several public health institutions in South Africa, such as the National Department of Health, the Gauteng Department of Health, and the Health Department of the City of Johannesburg. She was Chief Director of Health in the City of Johannesburg from 2004 through 2011. During that time, she was instrumental in the formulation and execution of the city’s many health-related policies and initiatives.

In 2011, Ramokgopa was appointed Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Health in the province of Gauteng, the economic center of South Africa. In this capacity, she was accountable for ensuring that the province’s millions of residents received the medical treatment to which they were entitled. She launched several forward-thinking healthcare projects, including the Gauteng Health EMS app, which provides citizens with a convenient and speedy way to contact emergency medical services.
