South African duo Babomncane and Sgwebo Sentambo deliver “Sekukaningi (Album),” a thirteen-track Maskandi project built entirely on shared perspective and consistency.
Opener “Bhinca Lami” brings in Njabulo Langa for extra weight, setting a rooted, guitar-driven tone right from the start. So “Babomncane Sekukaningi” doesn’t rush anywhere. It leans into tradition rather than chasing crossover polish, letting vocal interplay carry most of the record’s weight throughout the whole tracklist.
From there, the album moves through “Usawoti Olwandle” with Shenge Wasehlalankosi and Cevuzile, before the title track itself arrives mid-project. That’s deliberate placement, honestly. Naming a track after the whole album usually signals extra meaning, and “Sekukaningi” translates loosely to something about repetition or recurring truth, a theme that runs through the entire collaboration. Umnotho shows up twice later on, contributing to both “Umuntu Westhathu” and “Ngiyaqala,” while Uqoqqa adds another voice on “Ngeke Ngikuyeke.”
Thirteen songs is a lot of ground to cover, but Babomncane and Sgwebo Sentambo keep things grounded in acoustic Maskandi instrumentation throughout, never reaching for outside interference. The result touches on love, hardship and everyday life without losing that lived-in chemistry between the two lead artists.
