South African vocalist Babomncane links up with Sgwebo Sentambo and Umnotho again on “Ngiyaqala,” track eight off their joint Maskandi project “Sekukaningi.” The title translates loosely to starting over, and that sense of renewal runs through the whole record.
After the tension of earlier tracks, Babomncane and Sgwebo Sentambo shift the mood here toward something more hopeful. Bringing Umnotho back into the fold keeps the same trio dynamic from the previous track, but the theme moves in a different direction. It reads like a natural turning point within the larger arc of “Sekukaningi.”
The production stays consistent with the album’s acoustic Maskandi foundation, guitar-driven and unhurried throughout. Nothing here reaches for outside polish. Instead, the arrangement leaves space for the theme of fresh starts to breathe naturally across the record.
