SGVO drops his five-track project “Afro Archives,” pulling together some of South Africa’s most respected Amapiano and Afro-electronic voices across the tracklist.
The project opens with “Thando Awpheli,” reworking a 2024 Shakes & Les record that already found traction on their “MKHAYA” EP. Also, Young Stunna and Artwork Sounds return here, giving the opener real vocal weight before the compilation moves forward. Track two, “Oko Oko,” follows a similar approach, reimagining Tycoon and Makhanj’s earlier release rather than building something entirely new from scratch. That reworking style runs through much of “Afro Archives,” with SGVO treating familiar Amapiano records as raw material for his own atmospheric reinterpretation.
“Bassbox!” brings Benzoo and Scotts Maphuma into the mix, keeping the tempo steady at 118 BPM. “Noize” follows with 2woBunnies and Pandemic Boyz contributing a layered, collaborative groove. Also, the project closes with “Nguwe (Afro Take)” featuring Artwork Sounds, a slower, more intimate record built around restraint rather than dancefloor urgency.
SGVO has built his reputation in the Mzansi electronic scene through exactly this kind of patient, dub-influenced production. “Afro Archives” leans fully into that identity, favoring analog warmth and ancestral rhythm structures over noisy commercial formats. But the project still carries enough variety across five tracks to reward a full listen rather than skipping between songs.
